Don't let them tame you! Isadora Duncan

In Art, there are often environments that have negative elements, but there is a way to recover from the 'Amateur Expert' who insists or casts doubts with their presumed superiority.

Every Artist has a place to paint, sculpt, draw, design and write. There are not many entitlements in life, but it is your God Given Right to create. The below image I painted the day after I recovered from my first breakdown. I was 17 years of age.  I don't think about it too much, but I will never forget when a non-artist or creative person said in 2012, 'that painting is so boring'.  What did I do?  I didn't pick up a brush for 18months.  I believed they were speaking for the masses!

There is beauty in aging, it releases your inner doubts and offers an un-told amount of inner courage and perspective. Today, I never stop painting, writing and creating.  At 45 years of age, I have found as much peace as I was wishing for when painting this work.

In Art there is a history of Perspective..

The word 'perspective' comes from the Latin word 'perspicere'.  In simple terms it means to see clearly.

Art teaches us simple logic, it teaches us to see clearly in our 'real' lives.  Through Whistler eyes he taught us to 'see' London's fog, before then I don't think anyone truly 'saw' it.  What am I trying to articulate?  I think we have to be taught everything in life.  We are taught how to drive a car, ride a bike, eat with our knife and folk, and also how to use a pencil.  Yet, we are not taught how to be ourselves or how to negotiate our emotions, understand relationships, understand different un-wanted thoughts.  I know this scientific fact because 1 in 3 people suffer depression, anxiety, anorexia, other debilitating mental illness's, never mind other aspects of our every day lives.

What happened in the 'olden days' that isn't happening today?  have we lost our sense of community, family and simplicity? Art, Music and Literature was at the core of our story telling.  What do we have today?  Art Curators are reduced, Art is put on the back burner, book shops are closing and music consists of two words. There is little story telling, instead it is useless information coming at us a speeds that are often uncontrollable to keep away from our back doors
.

What is my hope for the future?   I hope for the original languages to re-surface again.

What makes for a 'Good' Artist and a 'Good' Writer?

Firstly, and primarily it must be your own work.  To abstract your subliminal voice into words and onto canvas is what makes the work 'Authentic' and 'Original'.  To locate your honesty is the first step, and of course story telling, ideas, thoughts and interest is an unsaid expectation. Creativity comes from brevity and courage whilst technical ability comes from learnt knowledge.  Anyone can learn to write and paint, but it takes only a few to step forward into the space of creativity.

I've learnt you can't judge a book by its cover, but there is always a first! - 'The Woman in the Distance' due out February 2014

Acceptance and tolerance and forgiveness, those are life-altering lessons.  Jessica Lange

My life on the land was life changing and after a time, hankering for the need for another human proved too great.  The enormity of trying to adjust to isolation hadn’t yet arrived.  My husband was genuinely puzzled as to what he continually saw in my eyes. He preferred and enjoyed his normality of a silent world. He was comfortable tinkering in the sheds, riding off on the motorbike, chopping down forever growing pine trees for months on end, and he was certain it was a city girls dream to also love a solitude life.  For me, it was a different story.  'The Woman in the Distance' reflections of un-settled seasons. Due out end of February 2014.

Lets Talk About Courage..

If we start with Freud, he said his theories can't be applied to Artists.  You need courage to investigate the 'normal' end of human thoughts and assumptions.

The more I move through life to learn, understand and grow it seems the less I actually know.  The grey areas really do take over.  When I was 18, I knew so much more.  Life was black and white, I don't think 'grey' was even invented.

Next year is going to be full of responsibilities. I have been invited into the Who's Who Magazine, and I know what that involves.  Many youths and adults will look at me and wonder why?  Why her and not the next person?  Many of us can understand trauma, depression and heartbreak, but not everyone can understand happiness, utopia and blissful fulfilment. Don't miss quote me, I am not about to say that I am totally and undeniably laughing in my happiness.  I am much more grounded than that.  I have written a book purely to pave the way for the next young person who finds it difficult to understand what to do with too many unwanted emotions, thoughts and ideas.  Writing and Art is the only saviour. Unfortunately, there is no other tonic for the horrible depressive foe.

'We often hear that art is meant to be very important; but we're seldom told exactly why' Alain de Bottom and John Armstrong Art Therapy, pg. 1

For me, the art making process abstracts us out of the semblance of ordinariness.  Our every day lives are important by way of keeping us grounded and connected to community, however the art making process takes me higher than that of utopia.  It offers peace and calm.  Painting/ art is our original language that easefully speaks to every culture and easefully crosses every Continent, country, religious arena and political realm.  This painting and writing tour offers the simplicity of what we are made to do: connect, communicate and live artfully.

8th Septmeber 2014 there will be adventures happening and you are invited to join me.

I have read many self help books and I have seen many great quotes that circle face book and, I still fear something large... that is, loosing my creativity! I know I never will however, as our lives become more demanding and there is, seemingly, less moments to sit, ponder and feel that sense of 'its all going to be ok in the end'.....  is easier said than done.  I think everything needs to be taught to us and we need to learn how to be free. I have often walked into galleries and I hear people saying, 'my 3 old could have done that' - well, no 3 year old ever has and it takes enormous effort, creativity and intelligence to make a picture that looks free enough to be a 3 year old!!!
